When a curious mind is forbidden
Good afternoon fellow readers!
Fahrenheit451 is finally starting to make sense to me, a lot of sense actually. I will tell you more about what has been going on in the novel this week, in my next blog post. Now I will focus more on giving you guys a character description.
Okay so the main character in this novel is the firefighter, Guy Montag. With him in the story there is his wife, Mildred Montag. There is the teenage girl, Clarisse McClellan. Captain Beatty, who is the captain of the fire department. A couple of Mildred’s friends: Mrs. Bowled and Mrs. Phelps. And also there is Professor Faber, Granger, and Stoneman and Black. I will go more in debt on the people who are the most important ones for Montag.
Guy Montag is a third generation firefighter. Suddenly, after having conversations with his teenage neighbor, Clarisse McClellan, he realizes how his life lacks meaning, and not only his life but also everyone’s life. He starts to look for meaning in the books that is forbidden, the books that he’s supposed to burn. Throughout what I have read this far, it is obvious that something in Montag’s mind is changing. His curiosity evolves and he suddenly got lots of questions and is skeptical to his job. He is starting to realize what he really is doing with his life. To me, Montage is an interesting guy. He has become curious and his future seems interesting with the way his mind is triggered.
Mildred Montag is the main character’s wife. She stays at the house all day and is obviously a TV addict. Not only that but she also struggles with having mature and real conversations with her husband. This is something Montag regrets a lot, not having a better relationship with his wife. Mildred seems sick, not just mentally but also physically. She is depending on her pills and she simply refuses to admit it. She even forgot that she had taken so many that she almost died, at least that what she says. Her desire to understand and work with her husband to make things better are as close to none. This makes me feel like she just does not really want to live and that she are very immature.
Clarisse McClellan is only in the story in the very beginning. After a while, Montag does not see her anymore and he finds out that apparently she’s passed away. Although this innocent and curios girl only lives in the beginning, she stands strong in Montag’s mind throughout the story. After all, she is the main inspiration to Montag’s reveal.
There is a clear difference between the chemistry between Montag and the different characters. The difference is for example between how Clarisse is such and inspirational and free soul, while his wife Mildred is a perfect example of a typical depressed victim of the society they are living in.
I find all of the characters very interesting, and I particularly like the way the author frames these characters in such different way.
Hope you all keep on having an amazing day and thank you for reading!!
